Bellueve College VR Lectures

January 14th 2020

Virtual Reality and Video Conference Classroom

One of the activities of the new virtual reality facility, is teaching students and faculty how to use equipment and learning applications. The multimedia classroom shown below provides a way for live classrooms to invite guest speakers from different parts of the planet to speak directly to class participants. These meetings can take place either through video conferencing or live meetings in shared virtual reality spaces. The furniture is on wheels, and can flexibly be moved to various parts of the room, depending on collaborative project and classroom needs.

The virtual reality communications courses at Bellevue College are among the first undergraduate classes offered in “XR” technologies in the Pacific Northwest. XR refers to “extended reality” or “mixed reality” – a range of technology-enhanced experiences that enhance human perception, ranging from full immersion to information augmentation, as seen in the diagram below.

In this short social media video developed by Nicole Beattie for Bellevue College web marketing, James Riggall and Bruce Wolcott provide an overview of virtual reality at the college.

The new “XR Lab” located in the Bellevue College library is committed to the application of new virtual reality and simulations technologies as tools for thought – to provide students ways to augment their learning through access to immersive, multisensory experiences.
